Family In Flight

Aviation isn’t just something Dr. Brendan McCay does — it’s part of who he is, dating back to his paternal grandfather, who trained pilots on the Link Trainer during World War II.

As a child, Brendan often flew jumpseat with his father, watching the cockpit come alive from an early age. His dad earned his pilot’s license as a teenager — even before getting his driver’s license. Brian McCay began his aviation career as a flight instructor, later flying mail routes, private jets, and eventually commercial aircraft, including World and Presidential Airlines.

Over the years, Brendan has enjoyed flying on his father’s various antique airplanes — everything from a Piper Cub to a Stearman. Growing up immersed in aviation gave him a deep respect for the discipline, responsibility, and professionalism required of pilots. He also had the unique opportunity to learn to fly from his father.

Today, Dr. McCay serves as an Emergency Medicine physician and locum tenens provider in Virginia. In addition to caring for patients in the emergency department, he is proud to serve the aviation community as an FAA Aviation Medical Examiner, combining medical expertise with a firsthand understanding of a pilot’s career and lifestyle.

Aviation remains a family legacy. Dr. McCay’s school-aged children are now beginning to learn to fly, becoming the third generation in their family to take to the skies.

Outside of medicine and aviation, Dr. McCay is a husband and father of three. His wife works as a locum tenens physician recruiter, giving their family a unique, inside understanding of the physician lifestyle. Together with their three children and family dog, they love to travel and explore new places — often by air.

From one aviation family to another, Dr. McCay is committed to helping you stay safe, certified, and ready for takeoff
